Home care in monsoons

Monsoon is one of the most exciting seasons of the year. Don’t we all just love the rains, sipping on a cup of steaming hot tea. But is your home monsoon ready? Can it bear the brunt of this harsh season?

Well ! here we are with some useful pointers on home care in monsoons.

  • Pre-monsoon examination

Examine your house before the onset of the monsoon season. Check the roof and terrace for any cracks and damaged tiles and get these repaired to avoid seepage.

  • Prepare plants and trees

The heavy monsoon rains and strong winds can loosen the soil and make trees more prone to becoming uprooted, so in case there are any big tree branches, trim those before they could snap off and damage your roof. You must also stake down young trees that might not be able to withstand an intense storm. If you have indoor plants, shift them outside as they would increase the dampness in the house.indoor plants

  • Home’s Drainage assessment

It is important to clean the rain water pipes occasionally to ensure smooth drainage of rain water from the roof. A plumber may be called to replace rusted or broken drain pipes.

  • Check Electrical connections

Check all electrical connections and outside electric switches to see if they are exposed to rain. Cover them without any delay to avoid chances of electric shock or short-circuit. This home care in monsoon is of prime importance as its a matter of your safety.

  • Wooden Furniture care

Furniture and wooden finishes including cub boards and railings can get musty or even damage due to fungus or termite infest. Keep camphor balls, neem leaves or cloves in the cupboards and closets to protect inside clothes and other valuable items from dampness. Wooden furniture also suffers because of the high moisture in the air, so stow it away. In case you have a leather couch, take special care.

  • Keep interiors moisture free

With minimal sunlight during monsoon, you must replace heavy summer drapes with light, lacy curtains to let in as much sunlight as you can. Moisture inside the houses creates bad odour, and can spoil your walls, wall hangings and furniture. Interior home care in monsoon include keeping fancy carpets rolled up and stored in some dry place. You can use bamboo mats instead. Don’t allow any kind of water to stagnate inside or around the house, as stagnant water is a ready breeding ground for mosquitoes.

  • Exterior Painting

Any exterior painting work must be carried out before the monsoon sets in. Try to use waterproof paints and the addition of a water sealant, which works as a protective layer on concrete walls.

  • Doors

Check for wooden doors and windows which swell up during monsoon if they are not properly fixed. If required repaint metal-framed doors and windows to avoid rusting as well as stop the rain from seeping though them.

There you are, all set for the monsoon. Go grab your tea and enjoy the rain !
